History: Edgar John Bergen (16/2/1903 to 30/9/1978) was the creator of Charlie McCarthy. He taught himself ventriloquism when he was only 11 years old. The original Charlie McCarthy was based on an Irish newspaper boy that Edgar new. At the height of their careers (Charlie and Edgar) had their own radio show from 1937 to 1956, and entertained such guests as Mae West and WC Fields.
